I have had a  desktop modem myself. It works with PPPOE. No driver
needed. Use network manager to setup a DSL connection and use your
iburst username and password.

The modem is never detected as a modem. The system just sees this dsl
connection as going through the ethernet device.

Since you have to network cards - try switching cables when
connecting. the pppoe discovery might be running through the wrong
card.
