I have one of those older laptops with a recessed touchpad. I
disabled the touchpad altogether.
When I'm typing, the last thing I need is for the mouse cursor
suddenly to leap out of my window, or worse, to somewhere else in my
window (i.e. document), because one of my fingers inadvertently
touched the pad. It destroys the continuity of my typing and
interrupts whatever thought I might be trying to express, just to find
the cursor and where it reappeared and undo the damage.
I don't miss the touchpad at all, and my mouse is far more convenient
to use, even if I don't have a desk to put the laptop on, or a lot of
space for the mouse. I prefer using the keyboard anyway, and a real
mouse beats a touchpad any day hands down to the max.
That's just me. YMMD.
