Thanks Ralf, you were right.
It was this lame package called "wbar" that I had previously installed.
It's supposed to be a fast panel that goes right on the desktop, which
I need like a hen needs a flag. I had thought it was some Ubuntu thing
and hadn't worried about it while using Xfce: The desktop plays a very
minor part of my life in Xfce, unlike in Openbox.
So, after your email, I did xfce4-session-settings, looked in
Application Autostart, and the only thing remotely resembling a panel
was wbar. I was temporarily thrown off when ps axjf failed to produce
any kind of panel like thing, wbar or other, under light-dm. After
finding no other solution, I did a find command piped through a
grep for wbar, found a wbar init script, saw that the programs on there
were exactly the same as on the panel and in the same order, I apt-get
removed wbar, restarted X, and bang, the lame thing was gone.
So thank you Ralf, and thanks to all the others who helped me.
Thanks,
SteveT
