When I start any of my Linux installs, I have splash screens disabled,
IOW I see the messages instead.

If there should be a Xubuntu splash screen, press Esc or a F key, I
guess F2, this should disable the splash screen. To permanently disable
it, you need to edit your boot loader's configuration.

It might be that you've go a large drive and the drive automatically is
checked, this could take a while. It also might be that the startup
stopped and you are asked to do something. You could see this in the log
files, but lets start with taking a look at the messages, you get at
startup ;).

This is Linux and the startup done by upstart (for other distros by init
or systemd) doesn't show graphical crap such as a hour glass, but useful
messages instead. Unfortunately many distros nowadays spam the messages
with idiotic splash screens.
