Hi. Not sure if this will help you but here it goes:

Regarding downloading Medibuntu, see:

Regarding playing DVD in VLC or any player other than Parole, what I do is  
first open the media player I want to use, then I insert the DVD into the  
drive and (at least on my machine) it then automatically opens the movie.
