I like to use grip to rip CDs, but it may be a bit overloaded with
options for your taste.  K3B is very simple to use, but it will pull
in a lot of dependencies to install.
I have not used VLC much, is there an option to tell it which drive to
use?  You could try using another media player like Xine or Mplayer.
