Hello All,
I used to have a working mic with dapper but it hasn't worked with
feisty. I've been working on this off and on for a number of weeks.
Changing this and that config without success. I booted a gutsy live
cd and the mic worked. It has alsa 1.0.14 so I built this version
from source on the feisty install. The mic still does not work. All
of the same modules are getting loaded and lspci shows the same
hardware.
I don't know what is wrong, but I think a pointer to the trouble is
seen from amixer. The amixer output shows the 'Capture' channel as
'off' even thought the level is above 0%.
Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
  Capabilities: cvolume cswitch
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Capture 0 - 35
  Front Left: Capture 28 [80%] [28.00dB] [off]
  Front Right: Capture 28 [80%] [28.00dB] [off]
Can anyone shed some light on this? I'd really like to get it fixed
so I can start using skype again.
The hardware is a Sony VIAO FS760/W and lspci shows:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6
