No, you don't need to do that. I've recovered many prematurely terminated upgrades and installations using a live CD. The instructions on that wiki page that I linked you to are pretty simple and easy to follow. 

And anyway, got should upgrade to 16.04 now. 14.04 is long in the tooth and if you encounter any problems with any of the software, the upstream projects will just tell you to upgrade to the latest version. 

I honestly don't know why people stick to LTS versions for their desktops. It makes no sense. You end up with antiquated software and no real updates, save for a few kernel or other security updates (which are not guaranteed to work anyway, since often the Ubuntu team is patching the kernel).

"I want a stable desktop" is not valid, since for the most part the bi-annual releases are more than stable enough for a desktop. 

I personally run Debian unstable on my desktop, and have no stability issues.
