Hello Ian.
The system is case sensitive with everything it does.
Home, home and HOME are very different, the case has to be exactly the
same. I think it has become standard to using small case in just about
everything that is named(other then the files inside your home dir). I
think to fix this, go to System -> Administration -> Users and Groups.
Edit your username's home dir to be exactly the same as your old home
dir.
