Please steer clear of PHP. It is very easy to write a very insecure and badly 
written program in PHP. This comes from an ex-PHP developer - I know PHP and I 
know it's limitations.

Secondly, I do think this is the wrong solution to his problem. It is a 
possible solution, but I don't think it's the one he's looking for.

Ian, while I don't really know of any frontends other than the ones that have 
been mentioned, I'd suggest you do some Googling.

But before you do that, perhaps there is already a pre-written solution better 
than you creating your own database? What would you say is the main goal of 
your database? It actually sounds a bit like a CRM[0], which there are a few 
open source ones out there already.

Also, write down the list of features your home-made solution has, and see if 
anything out there matches up to what you've got and want.
