Is a blank screen the blank screen of death?

Before rebooting try Ctrl+Alt+F1 to see if you get a terminal. If you do
then Ctrl+Alt+F7 will take you back and may persuade the display to come
back. If not then go back to the terminal where you can login and reboot,
rather than powering off a live system.
