Is a blank screen the blank screen of death?

Hello Geeks!

I noticed postings on this subject so I might as well chirp in!

Under 16.04 I suspended my session and the screen turned blank. When I
came back  to resume, the screen stayed blank and re-booting seemed my
only option to go back. So i rebooted.

 I was under 14.04 for about two years and this never happened.
