problems with grub and password

 I am a newbe with Ubuntu 9.04. With my last update of 9.04 2 problems
occured.

 

1. on booting I get the message:  Hd2,0//grub/splash.xpm.gz  failed to
read splash image.


2. and much more important. Ubuntu will not read my password. I tried to
reinstall it via suggestions on various web sites but that did now work.

    I can not do any updates  since the password is not accepted. Before
the update the password worked fine.
