Julie,
Freenode is for IRC, which is sort of like chat rooms. You should try to join irc.freenode.net (server) and get a unique nickname. When you have that up, go to the #ubuntu-chicago channel.
You may want a better IRC client than pidgin. There are a lot of choices in the repositories.
I am not at my desk so I can not include helpful links but if you wait for some other users, they will help. (I'm looking at you Jim!)

Hello,
I have been using Ubuntu for 2 months now. So far I really like it. I am trying to find other people who use it. And learn more.
What is chat.freenode?
I have installed pidgin, but I have no clue how to become a registered user, or how to access this site.
Could some one please give me instructions.
Thank you,
Julie
