Sounds like an X configuration issue. Every now and then I have a box which
has problems automatically configuring the hardware settings for the GUI.
(Particularly with the Dapper LiveCD -- but that's another can of worms)
You'll need to look into how to configure /etc/X11/xorg.conf
To see what the errors are that you're getting, log in at the command line
and run the command "startx". When the GUI fails to load it should show you
the errors ("EE") on the command line, and from there we can help you
troubleshoot.
This list is a pretty small group though -- follow Nixternal's links to the
uber-support venues for quicker resolution :-).
