Dear All,

First of All it appeared that the Dell laptops with Ubuntu in Germany, France and United Kingdom are not cheaper than those which are installed with Mircrosoft Vista. Why? Do not ask me. There are complaints about this.

Why Ubuntu (not saying that other distro's are more bad)? It appeared that this distro is most user friendly for not very computer literate people. The GUI is almost like that from APPLE Mc Intosh.

I fully agree with Mr. P. Kong that it is good for young people to learn themselves about IT by using a Linux-distro. More over because (U)(Li)-nux has been used for many years in big organizations like :
1. Banks (all money-machines are linux-machines)
2. ERP-sytems like Oracle SAP BAAN Huxley (you name it ; it works with Linux or Unix)
3. Big servers are operating with Linux-servers
4. Core software Mobile phones is Unix/Linux
5. WITHOUT ANY DOUBT LINUX/UNIX IS VERY STABLE!!!!!! AND PRACTICALLY VIRUS-FREE!!!

Shortly: Microsoft's XP and Vista will degrade more and more to "Fun"-software, while Linux' market represent the more professional one. Kindly refer to commands regarding Apache and Postgesql etcetera.

How thinking of a Linux Ubuntu Taskforce?

See in Kutching rather many initiatives; why not K.L..?

while a dealer can pre-install Ubuntu on new laptops from Dell as
requested by the customer, the question is whether the cost of Windows
license on the new laptop has been *deducted* meaning, is the laptop
cheaper than if it was delivered pre-installed with Windows?

herein lies the problem where our younger generation are obsessed with
games on their computers and handphones. also, the education system is
partly to blame for their lack of initiative in exploring new technology
in operating systems.

at this rate, we can only expect the bulk of future malaysians to be
merely computer operators.

one cannot blame computer retail shops as their role in the industry is
purely *trading* ie. they only SELL what the customer wants and worry
about the profit margin. calling themselves IT companies is a joke.

as to manufacturers not pre-installing Linux on their laptops, it's also
market forces at play. in other advanced countries where consumer rights
is powerful, buyers can demand the major vendors to sell computers
without unwanted software which has brought up the cost. our government
is very far behind in terms of consumer rights (or any rights for that
matter :P)

whose job is it to change the malaysian mindset?

that is a start although Linpus is more of an OS to show new users that
Linux is useless. hopefully these laptops are cheaper than the ones sold
with Windows on it.

it's a simple task to install Ubuntu on most hardware now. although
there are often issues with sound on these cheap Acer laptops. it does
take some effort to get sound working. this is mostly due to the poor
hardware in these low-end laptops.

Dear Donald,

FYI, the price for new laptops from Dell without OS is cheaper than the one
that come with Windows OS. It is about the price of that windows license.
So, customer can install any OS they like and not just for Ubuntu. They can
even install FreeBSD, Debian, Slackware, Fedora as they like.

But here in our company, we can give Ubuntu and copy it for free. And if
they need support, they should ask Canonical. AFAIK Dell have no rights to
provide support for Ubuntu OS. But they are so fast in providing Hardware
support. If you have any problem with Dell products (not OS or software
problem) they can come to your place and bring the spare parts for
replacement within the warranty period. For laptops and desktop, you can get
it in the next day after you report them and for server, is about 4 hour.
Dell service are 24/7 and you can count on them.

The idea of pre-installing Linux is not very good because currently we have
more than hundreds Linux distro. So, if they have em pre-installed, they
will likely to have to keep at about hundreds of stocks per shop as if they
wanna have all flavours. That's why they provide a package without OS and
customer can decide on which OS to install. Maybe by promoting and providing
the knowledge of easy installations of Ubuntu, all these sellers will have
more choice of flavor for their products rather than those typical windows.
The only thing is those manufacturer have to support this OpenSource
Operating system for drivers and hardware related stuff.

last time i checked on malaysian Dell website, there was no way to
purchase a computer without having it come with a windows license. maybe
there is a way around it with an offline purchase. i did not bother to
ask. *shrug*

as you mentioned, it is quite understandable that in the past,
manufacturer's find it hard to pre-install computers with Linux since
there are problems of which distro to choose and who will support it
plus the costs involved. this should no longer be an issue since the
availability of Ubuntu and Canonical providing paid support if needed.

however, the discussion was that Dell Malaysia is not selling any
computer _in_ Malaysia with Ubuntu pre-installed while they do so in
some other countries.
