The address 169.254.4.214 is set by zeroconf, which is installed by
default now. Basically it works like Jonathan Byrne explained in his
earlier response. Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeroconf if
you want to learn more about it.

The IP address and net mask are taken from the current setup. If you had
already received a setup by DHCP you would see the address and netmask
received by DHCP.

If you don't receive a DHCP response, there is no known gateway - that's
why it was void. You inserted your router IP, which is fine. However, it
will not work anyway, because the interface is configured to connect only
to addresses in the 169.254.x.x range. Therefore your router is not
reachable.

Until you get a better answer I would change the interface configuration
from DHCP to manual (sorry, ATM I can't test what should be done with
zeroconf installed). Set your IP address to 192.168.1.2 like it was
before. Set the net mask to 255.255.255.0 - then your router should
respond to a

ping 192.168.1.1

and your second PC should be reachable now as well.

Finally set your gateway and nameserver bothe to 192.168.1.1 to enable the
connection to the internet.

The setting of your hostname and domain name are not really vital.
