I think we have similar ideas. The odd thing is that if you don't need it, I
don't know why simply installing it fixed my system.

The package in dapper that contains grep-status is grep-dctrl. Try 'apt-cache
show grep-dctrl' to see if that is installed. You may also try 'locate
grep-status'.
