apt-cache show doesn't tell me if it's installed. It tells me info about the
installable package, whether it's installed or not. How about

	dpkg -l|grep grep

instead?

	$dpkg -l|grep grep
ii grep 2.5.1.ds2-4 GNU grep, egrep and
ii grepmap 1.1.0-1 Parse module map files

Or I can use slocate too, or look in the various bin directories, etc. I have
old configuration files in an old copy of my /etc directory, but nothing
current.

Black magic voodoo. It's the Linux way.
