You're certain of that?  What laptop do you have?  Mine's an ALPS, but it
reports as "Synaptics" in some cases.

Justin has a good point about the fallback.  Check your /var/log/kdm.log and
X0rg.*.log files for any (EE) lines (also for Synaptics/alps mentions).
