I don't have strong feelings. Am not averse to just making this kind
of compatibility change before release. Perhaps Matthew can persuade
otherwise?
The other option that seems sane to me is global configuration for it,
as mbp had suggested in the bug:

Per-command flags or a plugin seem like worse ideas.

A good start would be some detailed stories of how you use status that
motivate the change.
One thing I've wanted the last few days is a good way to pipe all
modified filenames to xargs vi, which status is not really the right
tool for. Would make these semi automated changes where I need to look
over 20+ files easier.
