I'm a long-time (since early 2009), non-power user who has asked (a
good while ago) for an option, or config variable, or plugin, to show
file listing relative to the current directory as git status does. I
was told that no one would use such a thing, but I could write my own
plugin. I asked if anyone would help me get started but got no
response.

It still seems to me that it's a good feature to have, and, with a bit
of pointing to a starting place, maybe I could help.
