Thank you to the several people who have suggested possible solutions,
and to those who have taken the discussion further.

There does seem to be a lot of confusion about what is required by
xubuntu, what is possible and what is not.

In brief, though, I find that none of the suggestions for upgrading to
24.04 worked for me (either from 22.04 or from 23.10), despite the fact
that one or two people have apparently managed to do it.

Also, there was a suggestion that my original problem - that I couldn't
install a fresh 24.04 on my laptop, because the installer keeps
crashing - might be solved by having a larger EFI partition than the
½Gb that my laptop had.  That sounded promising, in view of the fact
that 24.04 installed easily on my desktop machine, which has a 7.5Gb
EFI partition.  So I used gparted to resize and move all the partitions
on my laptop and give it a 4Gb EFI partition.  And guess what: the
24.04 installer still crashes at random stages, and it is impossible to
complete the installation.

Finally I have resorted to installing xubuntu 23.10 on the laptop, and
will upgrade it to 24.04 when that upgrade becomes available.

Thanks once again for all the help.
