I found what's doing it!  It's a bash/readline 'enhancement' called
"bracketed paste" feature which has been made default.  See the

The above web page also tells you how to undo the change, I've
implemented the ~/.inputrc change.

It's the bash upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1 going from xubuntu 20.10 to
21.04 which has introduced the change to xubuntu.
