The best way to resolve the problem is to do the following from terminal:

sudo apt update

sudo apt dist-upgrade

This procedure _may_ result in another error, which will give you 
insight to the real problem. Or, it may complete and resolve the issue. 
There are too many commands to include without the exact error message.
