Also take a look at Porteus linux. very fast / light weight. Hopefully you 
could build-in the features you want: read the FAQs.



P.S. You asked about locking a USB drive. Some of them have the ability to 
lock against writes but that would probably not be a good choice as you'll 
need I/O both ways.
