John,
There should be errors in this file connected to atril and core dump.
As systemd is now in control of ubuntu systems (systemd replaced
upstart), you might try journalctl as a way to get to the systemd log files.
journalctl is VERY complicated, however. See
https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-use-journalctl-to-view-and-manipulate-systemd-logs
https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/journalctl.html
For now, try this terminal command:
$ journalctl /usr/bin/atril
to give you all entries that involve atril.
You probably want to type the END key to see the last set of entries.
Here is what my laptop displayed at the end:
> Dec 03 16:15:51 NAME atril[23580]: g_source_set_ready_time: assertion 'source->priv != NULL' failed
> Dec 03 17:55:44 NAME atril[27458]: gtk_widget_is_drawable: assertion 'GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed

Note as well that atril runs without a visible hitch for me. So, many
errors are just normal background noise. What you need are the errors
connected to the core dump.
