[xubuntu-users] Trying to install 16.04.3 LTS, reached a place with no way out but the power button :(

Could this be related to UEFI bios? I would try Ubuntu Desktop.
I don't think Xubuntu has the hooks in it to support UEFI.
Then install xfce as you mentioned.
