I've installed Xubuntu on lots of Dells over the years and never had any
serious problems. If it's preinstalled it should certainly work
correctly :-) and I can't see there would be any problems upgrading.
Changing to Xubuntu is really more of an issue for the X interface than
anything else. I use it by preference because the regular Ubuntu
interface is bloated.

If it's whole-disk encryption there shouldn't be an issue either. All
out laptops are encrypted and they've all been upgraded from 15.05 to
16.04 without difficulty.

I'm looking at getting the XPS15, so I'm also asking the same question.
Ubuntu comes preinstalled on the XPS13 but not the XPS15 for some
reason, and I'd like to know what that reason is...
