My desktop takes 8 seconds to start up and auto-login in Xubuntu 16.04.2
LTS. This desktop was originally configured with Xubuntu 14.04 LTS back
in 2015. It's an Intel Core i7 running at 4GHz with 16GB of RAM and a
512GB SSD drive for the main drive. It has not been wiped or reinstalled
since 2015, but upgraded from 14.04 LTS to 16.04.2 LTS. I have not
noticed any slowdown over time. Love Xubuntu. Of course, this is not to
say your experience is not valid - obviously something is going on with
your specific configuration/hardware/software. I just haven't seen
anything like that on my system and just wanted to mention it.
Good luck!
