[xubuntu-users] install xubuntu core over ubuntu 14.04

Hi,

the original poster could install several Ubuntu flavours parallel, to
get a dual-boot or multi-boot, with a shared /home, but it also would be
possible to do this without sharing /home. Another possibility is to
simply install Xubuntu meta-packages by the already existing Ubuntu
install, IOW just to have one Linux install and to chose what session
to run, by the display managers' greeter. Usually a user could use
one /home for configurations of several windows managers or desktop
environments, just sometimes this could cause issues for novices, so it
doesn't harm to start by adding an additional user for testing purpose
and/or to backup /home, let alone that it is possible to backup a
complete Linux install.

Before going into the details of the available choices, the original
poster should consider to describe the reason to install Xubuntu and to
be able to revert back to Ubuntu, since there's another choice. Just
for testing purpose running the already existing Ubuntu install as host
for a virtual machine with a Xubuntu guest could be possible, too. This
isn't the best approach for all purposes, since a virtual machine has
got a few limits. OTOH those limits don't affect all domains.

IOW it's also important for what the original poster does use
Linux, e.g. office work is something different to real-time tasks such
as CNC or pro-audio.

Regards,
Ralf
