[xubuntu-users] install xubuntu core over ubuntu 14.04

Your question isn't clear. If you make a new fresh install, obviously,
you'll loose your previous configuration of Ubuntu.

But, if you have separated the partitions /home/ and /, you can install
Xubuntu only on / and you'll conserve your home folder where there is
generally your configuration file.
