I'm pretty sure it's nothing to do with the mousepad, looking at other
reports of the same problem it's down to software somewhere. If you
think about it *how* could the mouse hardware know anything about the
position of the pointer on the screen?
... in addition this is a Lenove Thinkpad with two independent sets of
mouse buttons and cursor movement hardware, both show the same
symptoms when it happens.
I will try plugging an external mouse in next time it happens though.
