[xubuntu-users] Failing to load xubuntu 16.04.1 iso from either USB stick or DVD

I am trying to get an xubuntu 16.04.1 iso to boot into 'try out
xubuntu' mode on an Acer Aspire One 751h netbook. It's failing from
both DVD and USB stick with very similar error messages.

What I am seeing on the screen, when it gives up, is as follows:-

I don't guarantee I've transcribed those times right! :-)

The system quite happily boots into an installed xubuntu 16.04.1 (i.e.
it's installed on the internal disk drive), the problem is that it
won't boot the latest kernel version. When booted into xubuntu
everything seemed to work fine but now I'm checking I seem to get some
USB problems, e.g.:-

Connecting a DVD drive:-

Does that look like some sort of USB flakiness or is it an incompatibility of some sort?
