I got fed up with it as well, including it shutting off the screen when it
was told not to.

You can put Sreensaver back.  Download/install the Xscreensaver package
and the extra savers packages as desired.  Then do a complete remove of
lightlocker since having both going will be all sorts of grief.  You'll
get the traditional Xscreensaver config menu in the Settings panel.

Some of the older individual savers crash (notably pac-man) and generate
pop-ups for the bug reporting routines.   Hopefully, if they get enough
data, they'll fix them.

As for 'ugly', you can disable the saver screens you don't like.  For our
application, which is lots of machines in a public Internet Den setup,
having lots of different ones coming up randomly on each of the 30
machines is nice, and actually gets favorable comments from users.
