[xubuntu-users] Synaptic doesn't work on a new 14.04 installation

Thanks for all the ideas everyone.

For some reason or other it now works as it should, I can start
synaptic from the menu as expected.

I don't *think* it was me doing something silly, but you never know.

It also runs perfectly OK from the command line now by doing "sudo -s"
and then "synaptic", no wierd messages about display not found etc. 

I think something must have been misconfigured or corrupted in the
user environment and subsequent reboots and/or updates have sorted it
out.
