[xubuntu-users] Menus different on new install, can I get the old ones back?

I have just installed xubuntu 14.04 on an IBM Thinkpad X201i.  I have
xubuntu 14.04 on several other systems but for some reason the menus I
get on the new Thinkpad installation are different.

On the Thinkpad when I click the icon on the LH end of the top panel I
get a panel with a search line at the top, a list of (supposedly)
useful applications and some other icons (to directories?) on the
right.  

How do I get back to what I have on all the other systems which is
just a single column of applications and/or directories?

... and why is just this one installation different?
