Please install hplip from:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html
You can install hplip from your terminal, I use hplip to install my HP
Network MFP printer/copier/scanner and everything including scanning
works over the Network.  A USB connection should work, as well.  Just
follow the instructions and do an interactive install.
