My preference is for CLI as well but for the folks I introduce to Linux
via Xubuntu the Software Center is a key comfort point. "You mean just
click and it installs?" type reaction is not uncommon and very helpful.
Later they start learning the more advanced options like ppd and CLI and
work in conjunction with the Software Center.

I personally have a hand full of packages which are familiar and don't
take incredibly long to re-enter by hand. Complete rebuild with all the
mods is usually about an hour or so including the re-mapping of data
paths for said programs. At one point I wrote a script as well but
found the subtle changes in distribution tended to make things not quite
right.
A simple text file with my favs listed and then sudo apt-get [copy/paste
file] and I am done.
