[xubuntu-users] Network Manager applet not in panel in 14.04

[sorry this is out of thread sequence]

I have just killed the two running nm-applets and have run a new one
from the command line, nothing output at all and still no icon:-

chris$ 
chris$ nm-applet &
[1] 2389
chris$ ps -ef | grep nm-applet
chris     2389  2013  6 08:21 pts/10   00:00:00 nm-applet
chris     2396  2013  0 08:22 pts/10   00:00:00 grep --color=auto nm-applet
chris$ 

Howver if I run it as root I get:-

root at acer-aspire:~# nm-applet
nm-applet-Message: using fallback from indicator to GtkStatusIcon

But I get an icon in the indicator area!
