After getting advice on the Ubuntu Forum, I decided to try Lubuntu instead of Xubuntu. I was successful in booting a CD into a LiveCD session and was able to access the internet and the forum to announce my success. That's it so far and my next step will be to try actually install it on the hard drive.
Thank you to everyone who made suggestions here on xubuntu discussions.
