Further to my last email. I opened up pavucontrol and under Output 
Devices there are two choices, speakers and headphones. For some reason, 
although it was not obvious by looking at the screen, the headphones 
were muted. I un-muted them and they now work as expected.

What puzzles me is that in both installations I had never touched 
pavucontrol. And yet, in Mint they were set to play as normal yet in 
Xubuntu the default would appear to be to have the head phones muted. 
That does seem very strange.
