Dear All,

Well, from my end, the mystery is now solved. I had:

1) Put a space or underscore (can't remember which whilst attempting to
pull Libre Office down and install it using Xubuntu's systems. So I now
know what the error comments meant - they couldn't find what I wanted
because it doesn't exist under that name.

2) I have to remove Open Office before trying to install Libre Office.

I don't have the free time to to try this now but will do so ASAP and
report back.

You're quite right Peter, I used Xubuntu 10.04 on the advice I found on the
Internet that it is reliable on machines with 512 MB or less memory. Since
I have an SSD on the system and it currently runs quicker than the Vista
laptop on which I'm typing this, it may well be that I can put a more
modern version on, although I'll then have to work out how to do this from
a memory pen, as I only have CD not DVD available on the machine. Sorry
you are also right that I should have written "Install" (and thought I had
too) not download. I can only blame a mix of old age, tiredness and a
soupcon of stupidity (check, check, then check again!).

I'll try 12.04 or would you guys recommend this years' short lifetime
Xubuntu as a dual boot on my latest project a somewhat more modern machine
which now (as of this week) has 1 GB of memory on it (but sadly no SSD
yet). The whole idea was to buy a really cheap machine like my own beloved
test bed laptop and see if updating to the latest BIOS will allow me to go
beyond the manufacturer's "official" maximum - not uncommon - in which case
I might stretch it to 2 GB. I've done firmware updates before and only had
one fail (on a CD unit in my old desktop. It should have updated to allow
me to read DVDs on it. It should have ...) £20 for and insurance pretest
seems cheap to me.
I still intend to try the BIOS update first but will take your advise on an
appropriate version of Xubuntu on the machine, given that all goes well.
It currently has 1GB memory and a Pentium 4 m 2 GHz processor. I'll be
starting with it dual booted alongside XP. Hopefully with the help you
have given me and all the books which have been recommended, I should be
able to make some progress.

The old Samsung will eventually become a dedicated controller for my wife's
kiln. The kiln's able to be controlled through an RS432 port on the kiln
controller and I have all the specs for the control system commands. It's
the interface with the user (very demanding!!!) that is holding me back. I
may be able to use one of the very small and efficient Linuxes for the
machine then.
I started with it because until the weekend gone, I couldn't even know
whether the laptop I've just bought would work - it was bought as "spares
or repair". I dare not even put dual booting on its much loved "clone" as
that runs the big A3 Epson printer used for photos of herself's artwork and
I don't wish to face her with the boot decision if she has to reboot the
machine any time.

So thanks to everyone who has contributed, I think the problems I was
having (with Xubuntu at least - life is not so accommodating) are now in
hand (until next time of course).

Regards,

David
