Thanks for the link Antoine. I also found a neat website:

It explains the memory situation and also shows the difference in output
between top and htop. I've discovered the command 'free -m' which shows
how much is allocated to disk cache vs actually being used.
With that, Manjaro XFCE on the netbook is only using 252 MB, which is
more along the lines of what I was expecting.
Now that I've played with Manjaro/Arch on the netbook, I'm going to
reinstall Xubuntu 13.10 and do some proper user testing.
