If it's just Ristretto, I would use another one.

FWIW Ristretto 0.6.3 is working here on an Arch Box, the others do also
work here.

KDE's gwenview kuickshow do work too.

Web browser do work as image viewers too, unfortunately Midori does open
the startpage and clicking again, does open the picture (or web link).

Firefox does work without such an issue.

Regarding to similar issues as you experience, I try to drop Xfce.

Mate and Cinnamon are not good for my tase, KDE isn't good too, but
beside my Arch Linux I installed Kubuntu saucy and I try to make KDE as
close to Xfce as possible. KDE might be my next DE, for audio work I
might search for a lighter DE.

All GTK/GNOME stuff seems to come with new "features" with each update.
It's not distro related, on my machine are many disrtos, among others
Ubuntu Studio (= Xubuntu).
