I am running Xubuntu 12.04 not your version. This is the version that
has problems according to my research on the internet.
So, for me, Settings Manager does not include Printers. I have to go
Menu --> System --> Printing. I have already set up printer sharing in
Cups for both the desktop computer (with the printer attached) and the
laptop. When I go as above I see an icon for the correct printer already
there, with a tick on it. This was exactly what happened with earlier
versions of Xubuntu.
To me that appeared as if the printer was found and ready. But as I have
already explained the laptop does not find the printer when I try to
print a file. It says that the printer is not connected.
My original query, way back, was to ask if this problem had been sorted
for v 12.04. It would appear not. When I installed v 12.04 on all our
computers it was because it is an LTS release. Perhaps I should have
chosen v 12.10, which, as it happens, was already available at the time.
Oh well, never mind. To get round it I send an email from the laptop to
the desktop with the file attached. I then go to the desktop and print
the attachment. It works!
