I guess because the folks who package wordpress use what is most 
commonly in use, so there is a standard to package against with regards 
to lib locations and so forth. My install of wordpress, using Proxmox 
and adding Turnkey Linux applications also installs apache2, so it might 
be an upstream requirement of wordpress ...I don't know for sure though.

But, that's not stopping you from shoe-horning it in using a tar ball of 
wordpress and then installing your favorite database and shoe-horning 
that to wordpress. It's just easier to get up and running with some sort 
of standard of depends... and not a slight against nginx.
