For your needs pulse and jack are at odds with each other since they
both want control of in and outputs. But, I wouldn't tell the average
user to use jack nor tell them not to use pulse. Switching between a 5.1
output and a USB headset used to be a file editing chore with straight
alsa. Pulse does that kind of thing on the fly. Again, good, if not
great, for the average user. YMMV, Ric
