Norman!

If I am understanding you correctly you are unable to change the the
font's size and since you mentioned that you are using "plain text"
go to edit--preferences-->display-->formating-->fonts next to the font
size you will see a "Advance bottom" click it and this will open a new
windows **Do not use the proportional** use instead "monospace" there
you can change the font and size Note: once you change that font or size
you have to close the window and reopen it to see any effects.
