Thanks Phil

Yes i read that through and did the necessary installations. From what
i can see the disc is not mounting. This is the same machine that i
had ubuntu 8.04 running on. I decided earlier this year that i was
going to switch to xubuntu but only got round to the install a couple
of weeks ago.

In the past i've found LTS completely stable and no problems. So i'm a
bit lost as to the next step.
